THE DAY IN BLUE RETURNS TO THE STATEHOUSE

SC House Democratic Women’s Caucus and SC Democratic Women’s Council Partner to Create a Day of Activism and Leadership Training for SC Women

The South Carolina Democratic Women’s Council, under the leadership of President Susan Smith, and SC House Democratic Women’s Caucus, under the leadership of Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter, are returning the Day in Blue to the SC Statehouse. This new coalition is providing leadership training for SC women in an effort to more broadly engage women in politics and recruit women to run for political office.

A formal press conference will be held at 11:25 am on the first floor of the SC Statehouse “under the Dome”, where Sen. Vincent Sheheen, running for Governor in 2014, will address the assembled crowd (estimated between 250-300). Democratic women announcing their candidacy for office will address the assembly at this time.

South Carolina is 50th in the nation for number of women in political office — dead last — a place where we don’t want to be. Prior to the 2012 elections, the United States ranked as low as 91st in the world for percentage of political seats held by women. It is the goal of the SC Democratic Women’s Council to do our part to assist women as they work together to ensure women are appropriately represented in this country.

The SCDWC is actively engaged in an important coalition building effort to bring together like-minded women and encourage greater participation and engagement in community and political action.
